3.5-year-old Damir Ershov from Ukraine held on to life thanks to an unrelated bone marrow transplant performed in Turkey.
After a successful transplant performed by Pediatric Hematology Specialist Prof. Dr. Barış Malbora and his team at Yeniyüzyıl University Gaziosmanpaşa Hospital, Ershov, who stepped into a new life, returned to his country after being discharged.
Dr. Malbora stated that the little patient came to their hospital with a diagnosis of leukocyte adhesion deficiency type 3 (a congenital immunodeficiency disease), and said, “Our patient, who had pneumonia 6 times in Ukraine, had undergone lung surgery three times. He had almost complete vision loss in his right eye and 50% vision loss in his left eye due to infection.
We performed a bone marrow transplant on our patient from a fully matched unrelated donor. We discharged him in good health,” he said.
